The Frontier Military Scenic Byway follows the old Frontier Military Trail.

The Frontier Military Scenic Byway abounds with history. The Forts tell the stories of the early military development to protect westward pioneers. The Byway also tells the tales of the incidents leading to the Civil War and the stories of pro- and anti-slavery forces as they both tried to establish themselves in Kansas. The Mine Creek Battlefield Historic Site recounts the major battle of the Civil War that took place in Kansas.

The Byway also provides wonderful opportunities to enjoy nature at county and city parks, the Overland Park Arboretum, the Wildlife and Park Mined Areas and the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, and Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area.
